Shop Smarter For Your Groceries
When shopping for your food, what is the most important thing to be aware of?
This can be a tricky one, because if you're talking about body composition and potentially being an athlete, we may say calories and macros. But if you're a general person, and this still applies for athletes, whenever you're looking at food, it's going to be about the back of the label, not the front of the label.
The most important thing to look at is going to be the ingredient list. You want to look for whole foods (foods that have not been processed).
If you didn't know, corn syrup is one of the Most harmful things they're putting in our food these days. It's banned in most countries outside of the U. S. Europe doesn't allow it in any of their foods. If you would get a Welch's fruit snacks in Europe, it would have only fruit. Why are they giving us all the preservatives?
Why are they allowing the labels to say “made with real fruit”, when it’s actually NOT?
You’ve gotta read the back of the labels, because the food companies are not helping you in any way. If anything, it seems like they're out to get you.
How do you go about shopping in a grocery store?
Ideally, I'd like to stay in the whole food section, stick to mostly fruits, vegetables, meats, whole grains. But if I'm being honest, I myself go down all the snack aisles. It's nice to look at the cocoa pebbles with the marshmallows, all the fun things, because I grew up with that stuff.
But I never decide to buy it until I look at the back, and I can tell you 99 percent of the time, if it comes in a box, I sadly have to do put it back. I think “Damn, man! I really wanted that!”
I know every single time I go to pick up a box of cereal, a box of Pop Tarts, a Little Debbie box, I'm going to be disappointed. There's something about it that when I pick it up and I read it and I decide to do better, for some reason I feel better about myself. So you're not alone.
You're still going to have the desires to buy it. But if you check the back of the box more often, you're going to end up grabbing it less and less often. You can walk in my pantry right now. All you would find is nuts, grains, and whole foods in here. Because at this point in my life, most things you find on the shelves now, don't fulfill me.
It might be hard in the beginning, and it may be hard for a while, but just because it's hard doesn't make it impossible. At this point, it's your duty to protect your health and your kids health because these corporations and companies are not going to do it for you.
