Carbs Are Not The Enemy
What's the first thing that comes to mind when someone says “I want to lose weight so I cut out carbs”?
First thing that comes to mind is ‘Clayre, take a deep breath. Be patient. Be empathetic’.
This person has no idea what carbs probably even mean. They probably are assuming carbohydrates are only pastas, breads, and cereals when that's completely false. Carbohydrates include fruits and vegetables and whole grains. So I try to be empathetic towards this question because I know this person just doesn't have enough information or the vocabulary to fully understand why that's not always the best route.
So, typically what I do in this situation, is I like to begin with educating them with a little bit about nutrition. I’ll ask, “Are you familiar with what macros, and how they differ when it comes to fueling your body?”.
And I'll get asked, “Don't you eat bread, pasta, and cereals?” And my answer to that is, YES. As someone who hasn't neglected their health for years and has been building a foundation, I have the privilege of eating that and being able to utilize that for fuel effectively.
The problem is people ask me that question as if we're the same. If you neglected your health for more than two years, we probably cannot eat the same. And that's just a fact.
I suggest you reach out to a coach so they can get to know you better.
They can get to understand your history with food and exercise so that way they can help you reach your goals with the most sustainability, but also in the most healthy and sustainable way.
